1 in 6 members were tested or treated for COVID during a year that transformed the health care system

Jennifer Miller | News Service of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Massachusetts’ largest not-for-profit health plan published its annual report today, chronicling an extraordinary year that challenged and transformed the health system nationwide.

“I am proud to share with you today the stories of how our company responded to the extraordinary challenges of 2020,” Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts CEO and President Andrew Dreyfus writes in the report, “and the strong values and strategy that are carrying us into 2021.”

In 2020, more than one in six Blue Cross members —618,000 —was tested or treated for COVID-19.

The health plan’s annual report focuses on the health plan’s response to the dual crises of the pandemic and systemic racial inequity.

When COVID-19 reached the U.S., we were there, for our members, for our customers, for our clinical partners, for our community. And when our country reckoned with a legacy of systemic racism, we stood with our neighbors, and stood up for change. In 2021, we will continue this vital work.

- Dreyfus writes
